Did Obama Save America?

Did Obama Save America?

I have to admit that this hub was started to get some spirited (and civilized) debate going. Do Obama’s policies lead the US down a path of prosperity or decay? We’ll explore a short overview of Obama’s presidency and answer this question: Did Obama save the American Economy? More importantly, is Obama a hero to conservatives?

Try to put yourself back in the timeframe of the election. A few months before the election in November 2008, a broad U.S. stock index the S&P 500, was down 45%. American home prices were down 22%, retirement accounts were quickly shrinking and people’s assets were disappearing. The collapse of Lehman brothers and Bear Sterns ended two of the oldest and most prominent financial institutions on Wall Street. There was almost unanimous agreement from conservative and liberal economists that we could be heading towards a second great depression unless the government intervened.

The Bush administration quickly created the TARP fund which allowed the federal government to buy up shares of banks, auto makers, mortgage lenders, etc to inject cash flow into these companies and keep them from going bankrupt.

“Now we have the federal government taking over ownership or control of 51 percent of the American economy. This is stunning. Prior to September of 2008, 100 percent of the private economy was private." – Michele Bachmann (R-MN). Of course, not all of us drink the hallucinogenic TEA that Michele and her followers drink. Many of us know that this is not true, but, let’s make sure we understand that Republicans are claiming ‘Republicans’ took over the private sector.

In steps newly elected President Obama. As part of his first order of business, he changed existing laws to reduce secrecy on presidential records and allow more disclosure under the ‘Freedom of Information Act.’ Obama turned to the financial crisis and immediately set up an oversight committee to ensure TARP funds given out by the Bush Administration were accountable and would be repaid. Since then, the government has ended an ownership stake in many of these private sector economies. Further, the financial reform bill ended taxpayer bailouts and forced banks to be accountable so that the American taxpayer would not be endlessly bailing out banks when they repeat their mistakes.

“The stock market goes down every time Obama speaks.” How many times did we hear this from conservatives? If you are happy that your 401k has recovered, you can thank President Obama. Again acting right away, Obama enacted the $787 Billion Stimulus and a series of small business tax cuts. For those of you who do not know, there would have been a similar size spending bill whether even if McCain had won the election. Both parties agreed on the need for a spending bill, the disagreement was to whether it should be 2/3’s tax cuts and 1/3 spending or 1/3 tax cuts and 2/3 spending. Obama’s Bill was the latter. How did the stock market respond?

What about Jobs?

"No," we're not talking about Steve Jobs. His job is secure, Apple is doing ok. Let's talk about the job picture in the US. The US was losing 800,000 jobs per month when Obama took office. In other words, you take the total amount of new employees being hired minus the people being laid off; there was a net result of 800,000 jobs lost. Take a look at the job growth since (remember when looking at the Graph, Obama took office In January 2009, Stimulus was passed in late February):

Let’s talk about tax cuts. Obama has been a hero to all tax brackets. First, his stimulus gave a tax break to those making less than 250k. He then extended the Bush tax policies giving tax breaks to the wealthy and keeping capital gains rates low. Conservatives have called for this type of ‘trickle down’ policy. Lastly, he enacted a social security payroll tax cut. Through this payroll cut alone, in 2011, those making $50,000 would receive a tax break of about $1000, and those making $100,000 would receive $2000. Obama has taken the opposite approach of conservative presidents like Ronald Reagan. Reagan raised taxes 11 times while in office, including 7 out of his 8 years. Conservatives talk fondly about Reagan cutting taxes and indeed he did. He made massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans but raised taxes on the middle class.

With so many accomplishments under Obama’s belt, it is almost forgotten that he put together a series of rules and regulations to keep insurance companies from hurting people. While his Health Care Reform bill was hotly debated, it was a huge win for conservatives and the private sector. There was no competing government option like the plans that exist in most of the rest of the civilized world. The Republican plan (if McCain had been elected) would have been to end insurance from your employer and give money to every American to help pay for a portion of the insurance cost. This would have left people to the whims of the insurance companies and wide open to abusive policies.

Obama has made the largest investment in alternate energy in the history of our country. This comes at a time where we see oil prices continue to climb. Years from now, Obama will be known as the president who ended our dependence on foreign oil. In the meantime, he as increased domestic oil production to the highest level in almost 8 years.

Ok, that should start some good debate. Do you want my real opinion on Obama? I think he has done some decent things but continues to spend way too much money. Cut spending down to a realistic level…which can only happen if we address defense and healthcare spending. If Obama can get our spending under control and start cutting into the deficit, he’ll be the hero conservatives have long awaited for.

I feel that President Obama did keep the economy from slipping into a depression. President Bush started it with the TARP program but Obama expanded it. The Obama administration put the banks under stress tests and made them bring their reserve levels up to appropriate amounts. He also helped bail out General Motors which was going bankrupt and is now thriving. The Healthcare Reform bill is not perfect but it begins to put some fairness into the system where everyone should be able to obtain affordable healthcare. I agree the deficit must be cut and it appears that President Obama will work with the GOP to get this done. Not by cutting Planned Parenthood and NPR but reforming and cutting entitlements and cutting defense. Great Hub.

Yes, to an extent he has done a great job. However, he immediately moved to put into power the very people who built the foundation that led to the global recession and the destruction of our economy. He has not pushed for any accountability for those who defrauded not only their customers, but the country (i.e. pension funds). TAARP had no controls on it, and ended up being a slush fund to keep the securitization food chain going. So far, economically speaking...the engine of SCAM is still going and growing...funneling money out of the economy with a vacuum.

Yo LRCBlogger! This is America. The businessmen and business women along with lawyers from Hades will keep America and the world in turmoil. That is the master plan and there will be no deviation from that plan. How many lawyers does it take to change America? It takes an endless parade of lawyers, preferably from Harvard and Yale. America loves these poisons. Americans will elect any lawyer to the highest office and the lowest office.

Obama saving America. Even if Obama wanted to saver America the GOP would kill him. Businessmen would kill him. There will be no deviation from the tyranny of businessmen and their lawyers. The people will have to boycott, sit-in,etc. Our country will not be set right at election booths. The candidates all chosen for us. These candidates will stick together even when an election is stolen by the opposite side.

Scary thought, Can you imagine if McCain and Palin had been elected?

Palin has continually shown the lack of responsibility an overly, self-loving narcissist would. McCain is in the banks and insurance corporations pockets--have we forgotten the Arizona banking scandals of the 80's?

Obama is cleaning up so many messes that there aren't enough Scottie's handi-wipes to deal with the fiascoes--from wars, de-regulation, insurance fraud, etc., etc.

If the Republicans get into office in 2012--America is finished if it isn't already beyond the point of no return financially.

Thank you, Ronald Reagan--he's the one that started the trend away from Keynesian economics--Voodoo Economics still don't work.

Interesting hub LRCBlogger but many people forget that it is congress who holds the purse strings and comes up with the budget. If you gage the stock market and the economy by what happened when Pelosi and the Democrats were in charge and what happened once Boehner and the Republicans came into power you could say that Pres. Obama had a better group to work with after the 2010 elections. As far as employment is concerned no one wants to look at the real numbers. If you want to see what is really going on check the following site. www.shadowstats.com Yes, it's true that all Republican politicians are evil money grubbers and all Democrats are saints who are in it just for the little guy. If you don't believe it just ask the green men on Mars or the news anchors on ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NPR or CNN. Has Pres. Obama done a great job? Well I guess it depends on which House he's following. Furthermore, the market would have rebounded no matter what, even if some of the largest bank and automakers failed. It would have been a rougher time for the short run but it is not really the president that makes an economy run but the individual giants of business. Politicians can take credit but it is the entrepreneurs that really make this thing tick. If the politician would get out of the way of business all of us would be better off because the market responds to what the people want. A few common since policies could take care of most of the problems, such as, a fair or flat tax instead of our progressive tax system that insures that he who can afford the best number manipulator wins. Again, this is the system the Democrat want, right? Never! If you look closely you will recognize that the richest in our nation are not Republicans but Democrats. You know, people like Buffet, Jobs and Gates.

OOH, I promised myself I wouldn't get involved in politics here, but I can't resist. I like Obama, and believe he faced a huge mess early in his presidency. He doesn't get credit for anything good he has done, and the R's have to stop stalling or trying to overturn any good Obama has done. I am a bit disillusioned by him, I think he needs to surround himself with smarter people. He really could have used a mentor to show him the ropes, as he really was not experienced enough. I still believe he has time to get it together, he is a smart and disciplined man. And I don't see any good R's who can oppose him in the next election either. Romney reminds me of a robot, McCain is a disaster and too old, Palin--don't even get me started. Huckabee scares me, he's likeable and ultra conservative. Our country can do better. Obama should get out of Afganistan, if we couldn't help in 10 yrs, they won't ever try to solve their own problems. Charity begins at home, and we should bring our troops home and fix our own country.

I like President Obama. Do i think he has done everything perfect, no, but with the Congress fighting him every step of the way, how could he? Let's don't forget, it was Bush who bailed out the banks just before he left office, and by the way, none of those crooks are in jail, at least President Obama has tried to help the middle class. Our debt is due to the unholy war when we invaded Iraq, and the expense of the war in Afganistan. If he dosn't bring our troops home, which he promised to do, i see nothing but failure for our country. How can anyone make a statement that the Democrats are the wealthy? i almost choked on a peanut when i read that. LOL

I think, Right Black was joking? Forgive me if I'm wrong.

I still fail to understand why Americans can't see that it's been the recent Bush presidency that's put the country into a tailspin economically. Clinton had America back in the black, albeit, with the help of a strong stock market.

However, how does any country deal with a president that spent 5 trillion dollars in 8 years? I can't even imagine that kind of spending spree.

Cut your deficit by cutting defense spending in half--no one is ever going to invade the US. What for? You're broke.

Bring soldiers home. For gawd's sake, you still have soldiers in Berlin--defending what--the Checkpoint Charlie museum?

Stop making movies about Arab terrorists...that just pisses off the Muslim cause and allows them to hate the infidels even more. The Koran has many verses that tell believers what to do with non-believers, infidels, etc. It's a difficult holy book.

Obama is searching for renewal energy program development. Isn't it funny that he's not an "oil" man? Hmmm, coincidence...nope.

Go after the insurance industry, these mega-corporations have been duping America into believing that universal healthcare isn't in the country's best interest. Are you insane? What about the Hippocratic Oath...shouldn't patients be as concerned about their own health as their doctors are vowed to be?

Get big business out of health care...and quit breaking your citizenry with unpayable health bills.

I could go on.

@HSchneider - a reason I like you is that you see the big picture. You can't look at 12% of the govt spending and think you can cut 1.4 trillion. Most of the money is Health and Defense as you pointed out.

@Texasbeta- I completely agree. How is it that not one person in the financial sector has had charges brough against them yet there is overwhelming evidence of coverups and fraudulent accounting practices.

@ MickDee - My man! You always see the real challenge which is removing corruption and money from politics. Politicians are owned by those who fund their campaigns

@randslam - thanks for stopping by, yes, it is a long process cleaning up such a mess!

@ rightblack- appreciate your viewpoints. POTUS comes up with budget, congress approves it/changes it. In regards to letting companies fail and the markets coming back, take a look at Japan's 20 year recession. Govt intervention by Bush and Obama saved our country from a long and severe depression. I agree with you on overhauling and simplifying tax code, it was part of Obama's state of the union speech. Hard to get agreement from congress but needs to be done.

@Jean Bakula - So glad you are here and decided to post. Make your opinions heard! I was upset to see Obama surround himself with a lot of the same people who got us into this financial mess! I also look at the R candidates for Pres and just shake my head...sorry bunch of candidates.

@Always - always good to have your rational thoughts and opinions, we are certainly in agreement.

The problem is when the people cannot purchase products somebody has to step in. Guess who that is! It is the Republicans that create these huge deficits with their cure all solution of tax cuts for the wealthy and elimination of regulations for corporations so they can run a muck! Obama had no choice but to spend, but the spending started with BUSH and his administration was anemic at job creation. I am waiting for the motto of the GOP to be openly F$%#& the middle class!

Fay Paxton 13 months ago

Where to begin...I understand the concept of surrounding oneself with the people who were involved in the problem. It's a practice I used to follow because they know where the bodies are buried.

As for saving the economy...I think with all the restraints placed on him by Congress, he has done extremely well. He has had to scrap every inch of the way...even with his own party. Many wonder why he spends so much time seeking bipartisanship...not just because he promised, but if I had a Congress and a Senate that took 18 months to pass my core campaign platform...I'd seek bipartisanship too. When you sign an EO to close Guantanamo and your own party members help pass legislation to block you...you need some support from the other side.

Everytime I hear someone say we are going broke, or too much money is being spent, I want to ask... compared to what? During World War II the debt to GDP was 122% and we didn't crash and burn. The debt to GDP is presently in the low 90's. During the Reagan administration, the deficit was $2.6 trillion and again we didn't crash and burn. It is now $1.5 trillion.

Everyone is suffering with Republican induced "deficit hysteria". It's the same thing Republicans did when Reagan was in office. Part of the problem today is that far too many people have just begun to follow politics and have no foundation for comparisons or analysis. They are listening to these idiots...half of whom have a vested interest in misleading the public and the other half who don't know what they're talking about.

voted up/useful and awesome

Good Hub! Well written and researched. You make some really valid points and I thank you for giving Obama some credit for keeping this country from a Depression like no other. I have to believe it would have been far worse than the first "Great Depression", for one of the most obvious reasons we are now a country of over 300 million people and the majority are already poor.I can not even imagine the chaos in the streets had that happened.I am sick to death of all these people who are in charge of our lives fighting among themselves, jockeying for position and saving face. We are not all in this together. Congress in my opinion is oblivious to the human condition.
